The 120 members of the volunteer - paid-on-call Bloomington Fire Department respond to fire calls from six fire stations throughout the city. The average response time is 4.5 minutes. All firefighters wear pagers and their availability times vary so all calls are responded to all day, every day.

Bloomington's volunteer firefighters include the young, as well as veterans; they are accountants, insurance sales people, computer technicians, mechanics, stay-at-home parents and the self-employed. Many are full-time police officers, career firefighters with other cities, paramedics and emergency medical personnel. They are your neighbors. In some cases, the Bloomington Fire Department is a family tradition that includes grandfathers, fathers, sons, daughters, brothers and, even, husband and wife teams. Some firefighters are also allowed by their employers to respond from their workplace.
